McKenzie Exercises
• by Dr. Adrian Cohen
The McKenzie extension exercises are a specific set of exercises that are used in the McKenzie method to help treat herniated discs. These exercises involve extending or arching the spine, which is thought to help move the herniated material away from the nerve root and reduce the symptoms caused by the disc herniation.
The McKenzie extension exercises typically involve lying face down on a firm surface, such as a mat or a Swiss ball, and then slowly raising the upper body using the arms and the back muscles. The patient is then instructed to hold the position for a few seconds and then to relax. These exercises can be done in a progression manner, meaning that the patient starts with a small range of motion and gradually increases the range of motion within the pain free zone. Patients should not push themselves into a painful position. Pain free is the key!
It’s important to note that this technique is not appropriate for every patient with a disc herniation, and other treatment options such as physical therapy or surgery may be recommended depending on the severity and specific characteristics of the injury. A qualified chiropractor who is trained in the McKenzie method should be consulted to determine if this method is appropriate for the patient.
